Why in news?

  • Assam's Kaziranga National Park (KNP) became the first national park in India to be equipped with satellite phones.
  • The step to equip the forest personnel with satellite phones would boost anti-poaching measures in the park.
  • The satellite phones will be used in the park's six ranges with no wireless or poor mobile connectivity.

About Kaziranga National Park:

  • Kaziranga national park is located in the Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam.
  • The sanctuary hosts two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinoceroses
  • It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and it has been declared a tiger reserve since 2007
  • As per the figures of tiger census conducted in 2018, Kaziranga has the third highest tiger population in India after Jim Corbett National Park and Bandipur National Park
  • It is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International

Other facts:

  • Much of the focus of conservation efforts in Kaziranga are focused on the 'big four' species— Rhino, Elephant, Royal Bengal Tiger and Asiatic water buffalo.
  • The park is crisscrossed by four main rivers — Brahmaputra, Diphlu (running through it), Mora Diphlu and Mora Dhansiri
  • The National Highway 37 passes through the park area.
