Why in news?
- The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), shrinking over the years because of encroachments, will now expand by 800 acres.
- This is after Forest Department agreed to declare 800 acres in nearby Aarey Colony as forest and to link the entire land parcel to the neighbouring SGNP.
About Sanjay Gandhi National Park
- Sanjay Gandhi National Park is an 87 km2 (34 sq mi) protected area near Mumbai .
- It was formerly known as Borivali National Park.
- It is notable as one of the major national parks existing within a metropolis limit and is dubbed the green lungs of Mumbai.
- The 2400-year-old Kanheri caves lie within the park.
- Trimurti Digambar Jain Mandir widely visited by Digambar sect of the Jain community is also located in the park.
