WHY IN NEWS?

Adani Ports and Logistics and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) will be acquiring 75% stake in Krishnapatnam Port Co. Ltd. (KPCL).

ABOUT KRISHNAPATNAM PORT

  • Krishnapatnam Port, popularly known as KPCL, is a privately built and owned all weather, deep water port on the east coast of India, located in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh.
  • It is located about 190 km north of the Chennai Port and 18 km east of the city of Nellore.
  • The port has its history back to Vijayanagar Emperor, when Sri Krishnadevaraya used to operate it. So, the name was given to it as Krishnapatnam Port.
  • KPCL is the second-largest private sector port that handled 54 MT of cargo during FY19.
  • Mundra Port, on the west coast, which also belongs to the Adani Group, has been handling over 100 MT of cargo for the past few years consecutively.
