Why in news?
- On December 8, 2020, it was jointly announced by the China and Nepal that the new official height of mount Everest is 8,848.86 metres (29,032 feet).
- This was 0.86 m (2.8 ft) higher than had been previously officially calculated.
About Mount Everest:
- Mount Everest called Sagar Mata in Nepal and Chomolungma in Tibet is Earth's highest mountain above sea level.
- The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point.
- In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society, as recommended by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India, who chose the name of his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest.
- Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary made the first official ascent of Everest in 1953.
- There are two main routes to the summit of Everest : Southeast ridge route from Nepal and North ridge route from Tibet.
