Why in news
- NITI Aayog is preparing a Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) parameter dashboard to rank states and Union Territories.
- The dashboard will help compare state performances and aid India’s rise in the Global Multidimensional poverty index.
About global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI):
- It is released annually United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
What is MPI?
- The global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is an international measure of acute poverty covering over 100 developing countries.
- It complements traditional income-based poverty measures by capturing the severe deprivations that each person faces at the same time with respect to education, health and living standards.
Parameters
- The index identifies deprivations across the same three dimensions as the Human Development Index (HDI)
MPI 2020-highlights
- 1.3 billion People live in multidimensional poverty globally.
- About 84.3 percent of multidimensionally poor people reside in Sub-Saharan Africa (558 million) and South Asia (530 million).
India’s status
- Over 273 million people in India moved out of poverty in the decade since 2005-06.
- The poverty rate in the country nearly halved over the 10-year period i.e. from 55% to 27.9%.
