Why in news?

  • Government launched a mega programme in collaboration with the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association to train and professionalise youngsters hitherto working as labourers in knitwear units under the Samarth Scheme.

About Samarth Scheme:

  • The ‘Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector’ known by the name Samarth, is a scheme to skill the youth for gainful and sustainable employment in the textile sector.
  • It is a placement oriented programme targeting skill development of 10 lakh youth in the entire value chain of textiles, excluding Spinning & Weaving in the organized Sector.

Objectives of the scheme:

  • Provide demand driven, placement oriented National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) compliant skilling programmes to create jobs in the organized textile and related sectors, covering the entire value chain of textile, excluding Spinning and Weaving.
  • Promote skilling and skill upgradation in the traditional sectors of handlooms, handicrafts, sericulture and jute.
  • Enable provision of sustainable livelihood either by wage or self-employment.
