IN NEWS:
- US congress has voted to toughen the response against the Chinese crackdown on Uighur ethnic minorities.
WHO ARE UIGHURS:
- They are a Turkic minority ethnic group affiliated with Central and East Asia. They are recognized as native to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China.
- Most Uighurs are Muslims and speak Turkish based languages.
- China has been accused of severe human rights violations against the Uighurs. They are accused of subjecting the Uighur muslims to abject discrimination, severe economic exploitation, social discrimination and forceful destruction of their religious ethos.
- China intensifying its crackdown on the Uighurs after street protests in the 1990s and in 2009, with large-scale ethnic rioting in the regional capital, Urumqi. China has blamed the East Turkestan Islamic (ETIM) for the violences.
