Why in news?

• Transport Minister reviews construction work at Zojila tunnel.

About Zoji La Pass:

• Zoji La is a high mountain pass located in the Kargil district of Ladakh.
• The pass links Leh and Srinagar and provides an important link between Union Territories of Ladakh and Kashmir.
• Zojila pass, at an altitude of nearly 3539 meters, remains closed during winters due to heavy snowfall, cutting off Ladakh region from Kashmir.

About Zoji La tunnel:

• In 2018, the Zojila tunnel project was launched.
• The project is strategically important because it will provide all weather connectivity between between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh.
• The tunnel is Asia's longest and strategic bi-directional tunnel with a length of 14.2 km.
