Why in news?
- eSIMs are rapidly gaining popularity in today's digital landscape with tech giants like Apple Inc and Google are including the facility in their products.
About eSIM
- An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is built into a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch, rather than being a physical, removable card.
- Unlike its physical predecessors, the eSIM's software is loaded onto a permanent, non-removable UICC in the mobile device during the manufacturing process. Notable devices, like Google Pixel 2, 3, 4, and the iPhone 14 series, support eSIM functionality.
- With eSIM, users no longer need to physically replace SIM cards when switching or joining networks. Instead, network operators can remotely reprogram the eSIM.
- It serves the same purpose as a traditional SIM card, which is to identify and authenticate the device on a mobile network, allowing it to connect to cellular services like voice, data, and SMS.
- With an eSIM, you can remotely activate or switch between mobile carriers without needing to physically replace a SIM card. This flexibility is particularly useful for international travelers who can switch to a local carrier when abroad.
- Some eSIM-equipped devices can store multiple carrier profiles, allowing users to easily switch between different mobile plans or operators.
- E-SIMs eliminate the need for a physical SIM card slot in the device, which can lead to slimmer and more streamlined designs for smartphones and other devices.
- eSIMs offer enhanced security features, making it more challenging for unauthorized access to the SIM profile and making duplication more challenging.
- eSIMs are commonly used in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, smartwatches, and other wearables due to their compact and embedded nature.
- To activate an eSIM, users typically receive a QR code or use a dedicated app provided by their mobile carrier to download the SIM profile onto their device.
- eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular, providing greater flexibility for users and simplifying the process of managing mobile subscriptions and connectivity. It’s important to note that eSIM adoption may vary by region and mobile carrier, so not all devices or carriers may support it.
