Why in news?

  • Judima, the wine brewed by the Dimasa community in Assam, has been awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag.

What is Judima wine?

  • Judima is a rice wine made from sticky rice, which is steamed and mixed with traditional herbs.
  • The wine is a specialty of the Dimasa tribe of Assam’s hill districts Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
  • The wine has a distinct sweet taste and takes around one week to prepare and it can be stored for years.
  • As it is a local traditional drink, GI tag would curb the misuse of the beverage by those whose product does not conform to the applicable standards.
