Why in news?
- The Medaram Jathara began on February 16 this year and will last till February 19. It is celebrated by Telangana's second largest tribe, the Koya tribe.
About Medaram Jathara:
- The Medaram Jathara, also called the Sammakka Saralamma Jathara, is a festival celebrated to honour tribal goddesses in Telangana.
- It is known for drawing some of the largest gatherings of people in the world, second only to the Kumbh Mela.
- The festival begins at Medaram in the Mulugu district of the state and rituals are conducted by priests from the Koya tribe.
- The place itself is remote, and forms part of the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary.
- The people celebrate it once every two years in the month of 'Magha' (February) on the day of the full moon.
