About Jamdani weaving:

  • Jamdani is a ‘cotton’ fibre woven delicately into finest muslin (figured with different patterns) produced for centuries in Bangladesh
  • Jamdani weaving is believed to have emerged from the Dhaka muslin industry, with both plain and decorative motifs emerging during the reign of Muhammad bin Tughlaq (1324–51), with the arrival of Persian craftsmen to India
  • It was patronized by imperial warrants of the Mughal emperors.
  • Under British colonialism, the Bengali jamdani and muslin industries rapidly declined due to colonial import policies favoring industrially manufactured textiles.
  • In more recent years, the production of jamdani has witnessed a revival in Bangladesh.
  • Jamdani is typically woven using a mixture of cotton and gold thread.
  • Lucknow in the United Provinces was also the most important centres for weaving Jamdani.
  • In 2013, UNESCO added jamdani weaving to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
