WHY IN NEWS?
Switzerland has expressed solidarity with India in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic by projecting the tricolour on the famous Matterhorn (Italian - Monte Cervino) mountain in the Swiss Alps.
ABOUT MATTERHORN
- Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps.
- It is situated in the Pennine Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy.
- Its summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe.
- Geologists have determined that the hard gneiss rock on top of the mountain came from the African continental plate as it collided into the Laurasian, or European plate.
- Sometimes referred to as the Mountain of Mountains, the Matterhorn has become an iconic emblem of the Alps in general.
